Tips and Suggestions

Suffice to say there's a lot to Ghost, and while there's way too much for me to personally relay to you they do now have a nice Resources page which outlines many of the platform's capabilities and how to take advantage of them.

A library of resources to help you share content, grow your audience, and build an independent subscription business in the creator economy!

There's a lot to digest there, the following two subsections presumably of prime interest to you.

Incorporating and/or migrating Patreon users to Ghost

How to switch from Patreon to Ghost [Tutorial]
Built an audience on Patreon but looking for more ownership of your revenue and content?

If it was me I'd try and scrub Patreon completely out of the picture by asking my Patrons to cancel their Patreon subscription and sign up via the Ghost system instead (perhaps with an initial offer/discount), but that's all up to you of course.

Creating offers and discounts
The offers system in Ghost allows you to convert more paid customers by offeringshareable discounts to your audience. Creating an offerThe offers page appears in Ghost Admin when you have an active Stripe connectionin place. Offers can be created for any plan or tier, using a percentage

Sign up to ChartMogul (before launching)

As stated on Ghost's ChartMogul integration page, "ChartMogul is a subscription analytics tool which gives you all of the important data you need to grow and improve your membership business." I'll let you read more about it yourself, but suffice to say its setup requires less than five minutes of your time, and it's free for those who have less than $10,000 in monthly recurring revenue.

Sign up to the Ghost referral program (before launching)

Before you launch I also suggest that you sign up to Ghost's referral program, signups that use your referral link earning you 30% commission. Emily will get back to you once you've applied, after which you can take up her offer of changing your referral ID. I'd suggest changing it to insurge, followed by adding the resultant link to the Ghost link found in INSURGE's footer.hbs file.

In fact, before you sign up to the one-year Creator plan that I've sent you the ~$300 for you could click on the Ghost referral link found at the bottom of my site. (Any money I get from referrals I'm going to funnel back into sponsoring Ghost on their GitHub page, which would give me access to info about their upcoming product roadmap and such.)

Sign up to RevSync

You may have noticed before that some Twitter users display at the bottom of their account page the ability to subscribe to their newsletter. For example, John O'Nolan, Ghost's co-founder.

One of Ghost's integration pages describes how to do this using Zapier.

Official Ghost + Twitter Integration
Integrate your Ghost site with Twitter to collect new signups from your Twitter profile and keep your subscribers in sync 📬

It's a bit of a tedious process, while also necessitating a Zapier account, something that could get costly if you start racking up a large-enough amount of subscribers per month.

Alternatively there's the RevSync option which, for a one-time, $89 fee, accomplishes the same thing.

RevSync
Turn your Twitter followers in newsletter subscibers!

Were you to integrate this into your Twitter account you would not only be able to attain more (non-paying) subscribers, but subscribers that in the future you could try and upsell to paying INSURGE members.

Tagging for posterity

On the off chance that you may one day want to go back and adjust all posts that are inclusive of a certain element, it might be good practice to add internal tags to posts to indicate what they contain. Along with internal tags for all the axiom type boxes – #Action, #Axiom, #Insight, #Box, #Foreword, #Afterword and #Amendment, there's already internal tags that have been set up and used for #Embed - Facebook, #Embed - PDF/file, #Embed - Tweet, #Embed - Viemo, #Embed - Youtube, #floating-images, #Multiple authors, and #re-post.

Use Canonical URLs when re-publishing

It appears that you've only re-published one piece before (Ugo Bardi's How the Roman Empire can explain the dramatic rise in state violence), but on the off chance that you do so again it's advised that while adding in the #re-post internal tag that you utilise the Canonical URL functionality so that INSURGE as well as the site hosting the original article don't get penalised SEO-wise (for duplication). To do so, follow the same process as when adding in the URL for an #external post. In the Post settings side-panel click on Meta data

– then under Canonical URL insert the URL of the original post.

Blockquotes with multiple paragraphs

This isn't something specific to the theme created for INSURGE but rather to Ghost itself.

On occasion there are instances where a blockquote you want to highlight is made up of two or more paragraphs, like the following:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In aliquam sem fringilla ut. Lacus viverra vitae congue eu consequat ac. Aliquet porttitor lacus luctus accumsan.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In aliquam sem fringilla ut. Lacus viverra vitae congue eu consequat ac. Aliquet porttitor lacus luctus accumsan.

If you select both paragraphs at once then select the blockquote button from the contextual toolbar you'll see each paragraph highlighted separately in the editor, and then in the front end you'll see things displayed as two separate blockquotes:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In aliquam sem fringilla ut. Lacus viverra vitae congue eu consequat ac. Aliquet porttitor lacus luctus accumsan.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In aliquam sem fringilla ut. Lacus viverra vitae congue eu consequat ac. Aliquet porttitor lacus luctus accumsan.

What you need to do is use backspace to bring the beginning of the second paragraph up to the very end of the first paragraph and then hit shift-enter twice. If you hit it just once you'll get the following result:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In aliquam sem fringilla ut. Lacus viverra vitae congue eu consequat ac. Aliquet porttitor lacus luctus accumsan.

If you hit it twice you'll get the proper looking result:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In aliquam sem fringilla ut. Lacus viverra vitae congue eu consequat ac. Aliquet porttitor lacus luctus accumsan.
